The Dark Night of the Soul for Modern Seekers
The Dark Night of the Soul is one of the most widely known—and frequently misunderstood—concepts in the mystical tradition. Originally described by John of the Cross, it refers to a profound inner process often associated with experiences of meaninglessness, inner emptiness, disorientation, spiritual dryness, or existential crisis.
This book explores the Dark Night of the Soul from historical, psychological, and phenomenological perspectives. Its central aim is to examine how the experiences described by John of the Cross may be understood in a contemporary context and how they relate to modern concepts such as depression, existential crisis, contemplation, and inner development.
Drawing on classical mystical sources, contemporary scholarship, and personal observations, the project seeks to describe these experiences as precisely as possible while avoiding both premature pathologization and overly simplistic interpretations. Particular attention is given to the distinction between clinical conditions and transformative existential or spiritual experiences.

"Some experiences cannot be fully understood through theory alone. They reveal their meaning gradually—in reflection, in lived experience, and sometimes only in retrospect."
